Why was Australia moved from the Oceania Conference to the Asian Conference?

The reasons were multi-fold. First of all, we would get much tougher, regular competition against teams we are competitive with such as Japan, Korea and Iran.

Second of all, it made world cup qualification easier. Instead of everything hinging on a single playoff against a South American team like Uruguay after a run of dud fixtures against Oceanic teams and a couple of games against NZ, we were given a shot at direct qualification and had a whole campaign to achieve it.

Thirdly, we can now host and participate in major events in the Asian region, like the Asian cup, and our clubs can compete in the Asian Champions League. This immediately improves the prestige of our players and their achievements will be more recognised. Not to mention the Asian Cup in 2015 will likely bring a lot of revenue, certainly a lot more than hosting the OFC Cup.
